New Detroit band Best Exes is gearing up to play their first show this Thursday, January 29th at the Lager House with Rebel Kind, Prude Boys and Moonwalks. We did a quick Q & A with the band to give you an idea of what to expect.

best exes

Who’s in the band and what do they play?

Jim Cherewick: vocals, guitar

Linda Jordan: vocals, guitar

When and how did you become a band?

Shortly after Linda moved to Detroit last year, Linda and Jim decided to get together and “jam.” They drank too much wine and wrote some silly songs, and it all spiraled from there.

How did you decide on your band name?

There was a lot of arm-wrestling involved, but the inspiration ultimately came from one of Linda’s exes, who proclaimed that he was in fact, her “best ex.”  Jim said, “make it plural!”  He also has a best ex.

Can you describe your music?

It is a lot like hugging a cactus…in c major.

What bands (or other) are your influences/inspiration?

Wine and day-to-day struggles. Broken hearts and one-sided crushes.

Who are your favorite Detroit bands?

Rebel Kind, Bonny Doon, Deadbeat Beat, Protomartyr

This will be your first show, what’s next for Best Exes?

We couldn’t have asked for a better first show. Thanks Seraphine! Next, we hope to break some hearts at a Valentine’s Day holiday market in Detroit on Feb. 13. More details soon.

Anything else you want everyone to know about your band?

We are not bitter, we swear. At least, Linda swears.
