Mary Rose-drums

When and how did you become a band?
We started as a band the winter of 2012. Our old bassist Shauna brought us all together. Lucy was teaching her how to play bass and she wanted to start something with Nikki. Then Mary rose was added into the mix. We all just met up one night and jammed to a cover ”be my baby”. The chemistry was insane so we all agreed we wanted to continue playing music together and make it happen. Shauna moved to Portland year and a half ago and was replaced by lovely Liz.

What has been the biggest challenge of being a band in Chicago?
There’s a lot of talent in Chicago. Though there’s plenty of bands in the big city, the music scene is small. I feel like we all support one another so it’s always one huge party hahaha.

As a musician, what are your thoughts on specifically being titled based on your sex (ex: “female musician” or “all-female band”)?
The music industry can be a man’s world. We all went into this knowing we will either be discriminated or praised for what we do. We carry our own equipment in and out venues without any help. We all have full time jobs and practice 2 or 3 nights a week for perfection. We work hard to be seen and heard as musicians not women.

What bands (or other things) are your influences/inspiration?11106345_912037398833500_1362658390_n
We all grew up in the 90’s and the music during that era was a break through for women. One of the main bands that was a huge influence when we were younger was hole. “live through this” was every teenage girl’s anthem.

Gear talk: instruments/pedals/amps
Lucy rocks a Gibson les paul on a Vox amp. Liz slaps on a peavey t-40 on an Ampeg b200. Mary rose uses meinl cymbals and a dw pedal.
