Where are you from?
Who’s in the band and what do they play?
Alex Glendening – guitar, vocals
Maria Nuccilli – drums, vocals
Zak Frieling – bass
When and how did you become a band?
Alex and I started playing as Deadbeat Beat with our friend Josh in 2010. Before that we had been playing together in various bands for years. Zak joined the band in 2015 but we had all been friends for a long time and played in goofy Halloween cover bands together, like the Ramones and Red Kross. Before Zak was in the band, Deadbeat Beat played with his old band Kommie Kilpatrick a lot too.
How did you decide on your band name?
We didn’t have a name yet, but we had already written a song called “Deadbeat Beat,” so we decided to take a cue from Motorhead (Lemmy wrote a song called “Motorhead” when he was still in Hawkwind and it eventually became a Motorhead song/their second single ever) and have the song title be our name too.
What bands, musicians (or other things) are your influences/inspiration?
Fleetwood Mac, La Dusseldorf, sand dunes
How did you get into making music?
Alex and I started playing together in high school because we liked all the same bands. I learned drums so I could play with him. We both played other instruments before starting a band. Alex played clarinet and baritone saxophone, which he kept up, and I played piano and violin, which I quit to focus on drums.
Tell us about your first show.
It’s kind of funny; Zak actually played with us at our first show before he was in the band. It was at the Leroy St. house in 2010. Our guitar player Josh couldn’t make it because he had to work, and we decided to play it anyway to get our first show out of the way. Alex, Zak and I had all just played in a Red Kross cover band together for Halloween so in addition to Alex and I playing DBB songs as a two-piece, for some reason Zak joined us to play the entire Annette’s Got the Hits EP.
Gear talk! Tell us about your instruments/pedals/amps/drum set!
Alex mostly plays a Gibson SG, but sometimes a Rickenbacker 360, and sometimes uses a Twin Reverb, or different amps too. He also uses an Ibanez DE7 Delay and a MXR Phase 90. I play a Gretsch Catalina Club with a 1970s Slingerland snare, a 1970s Zildjian crash that has seen better days, a Zildjian ride that I recently turned into a sizzle cymbal, and my favorite part: a set of big AF 1960s Zildjian 15” hi-hat cymbals. Zak plays a cream Squire P bass with three strings out of an Acoustic amp.
Who are your favorite Detroit musicians/bands?
Kickstand Band, Duane, Rebel Kind, Paint Thinner, Mountains and Rainbows, Beekeepers… and all of our friends’ other bands too.
What is your favorite song right now?
Alex: “Destroyer” by Kelly Jean Caldwell.
Maria: Julian Cope’s cover of Roky Erickson’s “I Have Always Been Here Before.”
Zak: “Treason” by the Bats.
What is your favorite way to unwind?
We all like to listen to records, cook food, and to spend time outdoors.
