Autumn Nicole & Andrew Thomas
Where are you from?
Ann Arbor, MI
Who’s in the band and what do they play?
Autumn: guitar & vocals
Andrew: guitar & vocals
Andrew is my roommate and is often playing around on the acoustic when home, so I asked if he’d want to play with me for this show. We are doing a duet of a song he wrote, too.
When and how did you become a band?
I’ve played solo by myself for several years with rotating friends accompanying me at times.
Can you describe your music?
Softly twangy & folky
What bands, musicians (or other things) are your influences/inspiration?
“You lay your love down and fold it in a crease.” This is something a friend told me I said in a dream they had about my music and inspirations.
How did you get into making music?
Music has always been important to me since I was growing up. I started messing around with guitar when I was fourteen, but I didn’t really feel like I wanted to try MAKING music till I heard the first Vivian Girls album. I heard Frankie Rose’s drumming and thought, “I could do that.”
Tell us about your first show.
My first show playing as Rebel Kind/any of my own material really was in 2012 at Luther Fest. I played an acoustic with a pick up and my boyfriend at the time accompanied me on drums.
Does your gender identity/presentation influence your music? Has it presented any issues for you?
I think it definitely has informed me as a person, who I am, and what I believe in very much. I’m not sure if it influences my music at all. I’ve always felt very empowered and influenced by other female musicians. I’ve been fairly lucky to have not experienced a ton issues related to my gender in regards to my music or maybe at least anything that has been a major struggle or problem. There are always annoying little things that can happen, but the coolest is when other women see you and then tell you after how great they thought you were and it made them want to pick up an instrument.
Gear talk! Tell us about your instruments/pedals/amps/drum set!
I don’t really care about gear at all, but I LOVE my Danelectro guitar. It just feels so perfect to me.
Who are your favorite Detroit musicians/bands?
Deadbeat Beat, Bonny Doon, Fred Thomas, Kelly Jean Caldwell Band, Van Houten, Jim Cherewick, Stef Chura, Modern Lady Fitness. There are lots more.
What is your favorite song right now?
Magnetic Fields – Strange Powers. This song is giving me all types of great feels lately. I’ve also been listening to the Bonny Doon album and so many of those songs and riffs get stuck in my head!
What is your favorite way to unwind?
I like to read a lot. On the weekends I like to go out with my friends and do karaoke or something. This summer I’ve really been enjoying swimming and just being out in nature and in the sun a lot.
